Wiltons Music Hall

Wiltons is billed as the ‘world’s oldest and last surviving grand music hall’. The hall was built in 1858 by John Wilton and at its peak could accommodate around 1,500 people. Today the hall has a license for only 300 people making it a much more intimate venue. The building housed many different enterprises and trades throughout its history (see http://www.wiltons.org.uk for a more comprehensive history), but in the 1960s faced threat of demolition. Thanks to Sir John Betjeman, the building was given a Grade II listing in 1964. In it’s current state, the venue is semi-derelict and it is rumoured that if finances cannot be raised and no improvements are made then it will cease to be accessible within the next two to three years. You can show your support by attending a show, visiting the bar-rooms or just by donating your money. I attended a performance at the weekend and I would recommend it to anyone. It really is a completely unique experience.
